Choosing an air conditioner in 2026: Panasonic BZ, TZ or Etherea?

Three Panasonic lines, three price tiers: when the BZ is enough, when to pick the TZ, and what the Etherea adds. With sizing tips.

Panasonic's three distinct lines cover the residential AC market. The choice depends on the room, usage and budget together.

Sizing: do this first

Rule of thumb: in a room with average insulation and 2.6-2.8 m ceiling height, 1 kW of cooling capacity covers roughly 10-12 m². A 20 m² living room needs around 2.5 kW, a 30 m² space about 3.5 kW. With large glazing, a south aspect, an attic or an open-plan kitchen, go one size up. Oversizing is a mistake too: the unit cycles on and off, dehumidifies less well, and consumption rises.

Panasonic BZ

The entry-level inverter line with good efficiency and quiet running. Excellent for children's rooms, bedrooms and offices where the basics matter. Fewer comfort extras, but reliable and affordably priced.

Panasonic TZ

The mid-range: better seasonal efficiency (high SEER/SCOP), nanoe X air purification, Wi-Fi control and an easy-care filter. Ideal for both living rooms and bedrooms, especially if the AC also helps with heating. For most homes this is the best value.

Panasonic Etherea

The premium, design-led line: white or silver, a clean front panel, the best efficiency and quietest operation, nanoe X and precise temperature control. For visible locations such as living rooms, where looks and noise both count.

Heating mode

A modern inverter split AC also works for heating: depending on outdoor temperature, a COP of 3-4 is attainable. At sub-zero temperatures efficiency drops, so in persistently cold areas the TZ and Etherea hold capacity down to lower temperatures. For primary heating in a larger house, a heat pump is the better choice, but for shoulder seasons and smaller spaces an AC is an excellent solution.

Noise and nanoe X

Indoor noise matters in a bedroom: a minimum fan setting under 20-25 dB(A) is barely audible. nanoe X is a technology that reduces pollen, odours and bacteria in the air. It does not replace regular filter cleaning, but improves comfort.

Combined with solar

In summer, AC consumption coincides with peak solar output, so cooling is easily covered from your own generation. An inverter AC draws roughly 300-800 W while running, which also raises self-consumption.

Quick recommendation

SolarBay helps select the exact model and size through a survey and heat-load calculation, and installs it professionally.

Installation: half the success

Even a good AC performs poorly if installed badly. The position of the indoor unit, the length of refrigerant piping, condensate drainage and outdoor unit ventilation all matter. Do not place the indoor unit directly above a bed or sofa, as a direct draught is unpleasant. Put the outdoor unit in a shaded, well-ventilated place with maintenance access. Cleaning the filters and indoor heat exchanger once a year and a professional service every two years are recommended.
